Women
in Steel
Within the heart of East Flatbush a group of innovative young
women are making steel drums talk. Women in Steel are young women
from the “hip-hop” generation who have chosen the steel
drum as the musical instrument of their cultural expression. Their
repertoire is a potpourri of “soca” and calypso rhythms,
R&B, reggae, pop, jazz, and ballads, with melodies spiced at
times with samba or bossanova flavors. From their parents “oldies” to
the music of their contemporaries, Women in Steel brings yet another
dimension to the music-world of sweet, sweet steel band music.
Women in Steel is an all female steel band orchestra and young
woman’s development organization. It was founded and organized
in March 1994 out of a sincere desire to educate and guide young
women both socially and culturally through the art form of steel
band music. The group is composed of young women, each from diverse
Caribbean backgrounds including Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti,
Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad.
With the support of the founders and local pan theatre yards Women
in Steel has developed into one of the most vibrant groups in the
male populated steel band industry. We want to inform the world
that pan is played by women! Women in Steel is defiantly leaving
their mark in this industry. The women are energetic and as flavorful
and vibrant as the music they create from their instruments. Their
energy has captured the attention of colleges and various avenues
of cultural expression. Women in Steel talents have brought them
to the stages in many states including New York, New Jersey, Georgia,
South Carolina and the country of Canada.
In addition to entertaining, the group has excellent outreach
programs, which include public speaking and academic tutorial services
to other young adults. Women in Steel has proven that they are
not just an organization that entertains, but one that educates,
provides leadership as well as produce leaders.
